The Shenandoah Dive Locker
Mediterranean Cruise - January to July 1986
Italy in the winter...
...and Italy in the summer (we'll get to that later!).
Next Stop: Central Italy & Isle of Sardinia
Sunday, 09 February 1986 - My friend Rick and I took a ski trip to Roccaraso in
Central Italy.
Somebody slap me...I was born and raised 2 hours from Olympic Village at Squaw
Valley in California, but I learned to ski this day in Italy!
Quaint ski town; and heading back to Naples.
I took an excursion from Naples to the large Isle of Sardinia for
a medical check-up after being bent the month before. After arriving at
the airport in Olbia, I got a ride to another little port town of Palau - where
I awaited a boat shuttle to another little Isle of La Maddelena (La Mod).
This dock that I'm standing on was featured in the James Bond 007 movie title
"Live and Let Die"...remember the car scene that plunges into the water from a
pier?
The boat to La Mod; and arriving there.
This is a panoramic view of La Maddelena. A beautiful place, especially in
the summertime...
I made my way to the USS Orion and while there I made friends with one of the
divers on that boat - Jim R. He lived on the island in an apartment that
was reminiscent of Animal House. One night Jim and I were invited to
"Owens" home for dinner. His Southern Belle wife was a great cook I
remember! By the time that Doc Baker "officially"
cleared me for full diving duty, it was time to leave. Little did I know I
would return to this beautiful place on earth to live in just three short years
away...
